Essential Oil Safety: Why Dilution Matters
Essential oils are incredibly powerful, just a single drop contains highly concentrated plant compounds that can have profound effects on the body (which is exactly why I love them so much). They’re one of my favorite tools for supporting everything from stress to immune health to detox. But with that potency comes responsibility—and this is something I see overlooked way too often.
While essential oils offer so many benefits, they can also be harmful when they’re not used appropriately. One of the biggest mistakes I see is applying oils directly to the skin without diluting them first. Essential oils are highly concentrated and, in most cases, are not meant to be used neat (aka undiluted).
Using oils straight on the skin can increase the risk of irritation, sensitization, and even long-term reactions—especially with repeated use. And the tricky part is that you might not react the first time… but over time, your skin can become more sensitive.
This is where dilution becomes essential. Mixing your oils with a carrier oil, like coconut oil, sweet almond oil, or jojoba (my personal favorite), helps protect your skin, improves absorption, and ensures you’re using a safe and effective amount. It also allows the oil to be more evenly distributed, which actually enhances its benefits.
The other piece that can feel confusing is that not all oils (or uses) are the same. Different essential oils, different ages, and different applications all require different dilution ratios. This is especially important if you’re using oils on your face, for kids, or for ongoing daily use. For example, most applications are safe at about a 1-2% dilution. If you have an acute injury (such as an ankle sprain or a cut or scrape, higher dilutions around 3-5% may be appropriate. If you plan to use the oils regularly, or on sensitive skin such as the face (or with children or the elderly) lower dilutions ~0.5-1% will be more appropriate.
I truly believe essential oils can be an incredible addition to your wellness routine—but only when they’re used safely and intentionally.
